Psalm 119 is a favorite of many, as it is rich in many different aspects: prayers of praise, lament, vindication, worship, obedience, and petitions for wisdom. It has been researched that the word of God is mentioned in every one of the 176 verses except Psalm 119:122.
Many beautiful songs are based on verses from Psalm 119. Open My Eyes That I May See (Clara Scott), For the Beauty of the Earth (Folliott Sandford Pierpoint), Break Thou The Bread of Life (Mary Lathbury), Lord Keep Us Steadfast in Thy Word (Martin Luther/Catherine Winkworth), Wonderful Words of Life (Philip Bliss), and Righteous Are You, O Lord (Flourishing) just to name a few.
What may be more familiar is the Amy Grant song ‘Thy Word’ written by Christian singer-songwriter Michael W. Smith. It is a worshipful hymn based on Psalm 119, verse 105. The song was recorded in 1984 at Caribou Ranch recording studio near Nederland, Colorado – right here in our own Rocky Mountains.
I recently spent time with a friend who hums music throughout the day. When I don’t recognize the tune, I realized that it is her own song, being sung from her heart where the Word of God has been planted. It’s amazing that we can create our own music in our hearts based on the beautiful Psalms we read, and our deep, abiding love for our Lord! Find your song today!
